Summary: Over 50 years after its release, O pavão desiludido (1972), a novel by José Carlos Oliveira (1934-1986) from Espírito Santo, “remains one of the greatest secrets of Brazilian literature” (Silva, 2021). This thesis argues that the novel’s poor reception in the 1970s, especially among Oliveira's contemporaries, was due to its avant la lettre autofictional nature. The work is one
of the earliest in Brazilian literature to employ an exact onomastic identity between author, narrator, and protagonist, preceding even Doubrovsky's coining of the term autofiction in 1977. We believe the novel's aesthetic rupture—challenging the autobiographical and novelistic reading pacts typical of the readers’ expectations at the time—was instrumental in the
“deafening silence” that rendered the book almost absent from the History of TwentiethCentury Brazilian Literature. This research is theoretically grounded in studies on autofiction by Klinger (2007), Nascimento (2010), and Faedrich (2022), as well as in Jauss's (1994) and Alberca's (2013) reflections on “aesthetic distance” and “ambiguous pact”, which are essential
for the current understanding and reception of works like O pavão desiludido.
