Program historical

The Faculty of Philosophy, Sciences, and Letters of Vitória (ES) was established on December 7, 1951, and was incorporated into the Federal University of Espírito Santo (UFES) three years later, in 1954.

In 1990, the undergraduate program in Letters was divided into two specific programs: a Bachelor’s Degree in Portuguese Language and Literature and a Bachelor’s Degree in English Language and Literature. Currently, in addition to these two programs, UFES offers Bachelor's Degrees in Portuguese-Spanish, Portuguese-French, Portuguese-Italian, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Brazilian Sign Language (Libras).

Aligned with this academic development, the Graduate Program in Litearture (PPGL) at UFES has been operating since 1994. The initial discussions and efforts to establish the program, which was yet to be defined as a program in Linguistics and Literature or exclusively Literature, were led by scholars such as Ester Abreu Vieira de Oliveira, Francisco Aurélio Ribeiro, Geraldo da Costa Matos, Hilda de Oliveira Olímpio, Maria Elizabeth de Sá Cunha Pinheiro, Telma Boudou, Santinho Ferreira de Souza, among others.

Following consultations with Professor Maria Helena Werneck (UniRio) and a visit from Professor José Luiz Fiorin (then a representative to CAPES), the PPGL was officially recognized by CAPES in 1999 for its Master’s program.

During the second term of Coordinator Wilberth Salgueiro, the PPGL, after solidifying its CAPES rating of 4, submitted a proposal for the Doctoral Program in Literature, which was approved by CAPES's Technical-Scientific Council (CTC) in August 2009. The first cohort of the Doctoral Program began in the second semester of 2010. Additionally, in 2012, the program implemented a Postdoctoral track, strengthening its interinstitutional connections with other national and international programs.

In 2013, PPGL signed its first international co-supervision agreement with Ca’Foscari University of Venice and subsequently established additional international partnerships. Between 2014 and 2018, the program received CAPES funding through the Academic Cooperation Program with São Paulo State University (UNESP) and the University of Passo Fundo. This initiative significantly funded research, provided scholarships for scientific initiation, student mobility, and postdoctoral opportunities, and contributed to the program’s CAPES rating increase from 4 to 5.

The current structure of the Graduate Program in Literature, focusing on Literary Studies and offering both Master's and Doctoral degrees, reflects an evolution and expansion of its initial project.

The Master’s and Doctoral Programs in Letters aim to academically train professionals for roles in public and private institutions within and beyond the state. They also address the demand for advanced qualifications required for higher education teaching positions under Brazil's new Law of Directives and Bases of National Education (LDB) and provide high-quality continuing education for professionals in basic education.

Knowledge production in the Master’s and Doctoral Programs primarily occurs through faculty research projects and student thesis and dissertation projects.

Until the end of 2016, PPGL was organized into three research lines: (1) Poetics from Antiquity to Postmodernity (PAP); (2) Literature and Expressions of Alterity (LEA); and (3) Literature and Other Systems of Signification (LOSS).

Since 2017, the program has consolidated into two broader and more robust research lines: (1) Literature: Otherness and Society (LAS); and (2) Poetics from Antiquity to Contemporary Times (PAC).

Beginning in 2023, PPGL restructured into four research lines to align with the program's historical trajectory and broader trends in Literary Studies in Brazil and worldwide: (1) Literature: Alterity, History, and Society (LAHS); (2) Literature: Creative Writing, Translation, and Teaching (LECTE); (3) Literature and Other Systems of Signification (LOSS); and (4) Poetics.

These changes result from continuous evaluation and strategic planning, responding to reviewer feedback, faculty developments, societal needs, and advancements in the field of Literary Studies.

Research and outreach projects conducted within the program’s Study and Research Centers and Groups, along with local and international exchange activities, ensure a broad and comprehensive intellectual output within the Graduate Program in Letters.

Graduates and enrolled:The program already has 284 masters and 135 doctors and counts with 64 students regularly enrolled, being 23 in the masters and 41 in the doctorate.
