Summary: This thesis aims to analyze 26 poems featured in the “Literature” section of the
alternative gay newspaper Lampião da Esquina (1978–1981) – a Rio-based
periodical with national circulation, particularly following the political opening of
the Brazilian military dictatorship. Based on these analyses, the publication’s
literary segment is posited as a site of paratopia. This concept, formulated by
Maingueneau (2006), stems from the idea that the notion of the author is
socially constructed through the discursive conditions that surround and either
legitimize or delegitimize them. Due to censorship imposed by the dictatorship’s
sovereign order, many of these literary works occupied an unstable position; the
authors often inhabited a social topography that stripped them of their rights to
political life, leaving them to exist in a society where their participation was
relegated to a zone of exclusion (Agamben, 2002; 2007). Examining the poetic
voices within this alternative periodical reveals that they bear witness to the
social experiences of an excluded (minority) group, offering insight into how
these individuals lived within that landscape. These poems serve as “poetic
archives” – instruments of resistance and representations of the cultural
practices of these vulnerable social minorities. Furthermore, the literary fabric
under analysis helps shape the memory of the Brazilian LGBTQIAPN+
community; the poetry in Lampião conveys a gay/orgiastic ethos that
transcends the mere depiction of sexual experiences, encompassing the
affections, modes of sociability, and forms of existence of this social group.
Although it did not explicitly address the dictatorship, this literary output
recorded dissident lived experiences and subjectivities amidst a political context
defined by repression and cis-hetero-military normativity.
