Summary: This dissertation in Creative Writing investigates poetic creation and reflects on the
specificity of literary writing, particularly within a testimonial context. The dissertation
is divided into three chapters. The first consists of a literary work entitled Deserting,
comprising 45 poems that articulate a process of inflecting catastrophe within
subjective experience, based on a liminal event: the violent neo-Nazi and misogynistic
attack that took place on November 25, 2022, at the Primo Bitti State Elementary and
Secondary School and the Praia de Coqueiral Educational Center, in Coqueiral de
Aracruz, Espírito Santo, Brazil, in which 12 people were injured and Penha, Flávia,
Cybelle, and Selena were murdered. The second chapter establishes connections
between the elements that transformed a collective catastrophe into a singular
experience and the aesthetic choices that shape the poetry collection, reflecting on
literary writing as a means of elaborating everyday violence. To this end, the author
revisits her trajectory as a reader, teacher, and writer, articulating personal memories
with images, maps, reports, news articles, and teaching activities that contextualize
the territory and historical moment in which the poems of Deserting were written. In
doing so, the chapter also produces a memorial record of the events surrounding the
Aracruz school massacre from the perspective of a teacher at one of the attacked
schools. Finally, the dissertation presents a survey of Creative Writing as a research
field within the Graduate Program in Letters at the Federal University of Espírito Santo
(Ufes), discussing definitions of the concept, its development within Brazilian
universities, and the initiatives aimed at consolidating the research line “Literature:
Creative Writing, Translation, and Teaching,” highlighting its relevance to the education
of writers in Espírito Santo.
