Summary: Theoretical and bibliographic in nature, this research developed a principlel
proposal for pedagogical work in high school based on the novel Memórias de
um Sargento de Milícias by Manuel Antônio de Almeida (2018 [1852–53]),
grounded in historical-dialectical materialism, taking into account part of the main
critical bibliography on the novel (Candido, 1970; Schwartz, 1987; Otsuka, 2007,
2016a, 2016b; Bueno, 2008). The work is based on the assumptions of HistoricalCritical Pedagogy regarding the role of the school in the socialization of
knowledge historically and collectively produced by humanity (Saviani, 2012), as
well as on the principles of Cultural-Historical Psychology which identifies the
development of the psyche and the formation of complex behaviors, thus
highlighting the role of pedagogical work oriented towards the appropriation of
concepts (artistic, scientific and philosophical) for the development of the human
psyche (Martins, 2013). In this way, the study systematized principles, methods
and procedures for conducting full literary reading with classical literary works in
the school context, aiming at the omnilateral education of high school students
(Della Fonte, 2020), addressing aspects such as: the selection of content, the
realistic character of classical works of art and the teacher’s intentional and
planned mediation.
