Summary: Slavery left deep marks WHEREver it went, and the propagated horrors by its institution
will always be remembered as belonging to most execrable moments in history. These
marks are represented in the Brazilian literature through the black characters, in
captivity situation and freed, of slaves' masters and the established interpersonal
relations between them and that used to be dictated by the control and the domination
through the use the violence. The present dissertation analysis these maintained
relations between whites and blacks, inserted into a society governed by the bourgeois
patriarchalism of the 19th century, in the tales and chronicles that compose the corpus,
from the identification of characterizing aspects of the use of violence as a tool of
domination of the other, in special the black woman in captivity situation, and the
narrative strategies used by Machado de Assis to critics the Brazilian eighties society,
the institution of slavery, the slow process of Abolition, and the situation of the freed
slave before and after the signing of the Lei Aurea, in order to expand the studies about
the negro's presence and the abolitionist discourse in the writings of Machado de
Assis.
