Summary: The studies on literary affiliation once linked to a specific tradition, show that creative writing
has to do with identification along with the subsequent transgression of a literary
project.Borges affiliation to theCervantine literature is a classic example in the field of
literary studies.Several works show the existing relation between both authors, however, the
aim of these works is, actually, to verify an explicit intertextuality.
This doctoral thesis, though, aims to demonstrate and analyse a more implicit form of
intertextuality a thematic one that can be found in the works of Borges in reference to
Cervantes Dom Quixote. Our work contemplates one of the signature motifs of the
Argentinian writer the infinity as being aneffect of identification with Dom Quixote and
its main theme: madness.
Psychoanalysis will be used as theoretical framework in order to support the idea of
approximation of the themes we aim to approach. At the same time;psychoanalytical criticism
is intended to sustain the matters regarding literary affiliation and the importance of the
Paternal Function when it comes to creating a singular piece of writing. This will be done
considering the Lacanian theory affirming that, in order to have the father as a signifier; one
must deny this father first.
There will not be a biographical research of Borges or Cervantes in any way; instead we
intend to concentrate on how a literary project is developed in comparison to a different one,
and the thematic effects that emerge of this affiliation.
The connection between both authors is beinganalysed through the optics of Freud and Lacan,
along with works on literary theory and literary criticism.
Key-words: literary affiliation, Paternal Function, infinity, intertextuality, madness
